Germinating seeds in eggshells
How to make: For this craft you will need several eggs, soil and oats. Oats can be purchased in the pet food aisle under the name “Grass for Cats.”
- Prepare empty egg shells and egg cartons to hold them. If there are not many eggs, it is better to cut the package, leaving in it exactly as many cells as you have eggs.
- Mix the earth with grains in equal proportions. For one egg, about a tablespoon of earth and the same amount of oats will do.
- Carefully pour the mixture into the shells and place in a sunny place.
It is advisable to do this whole event a week before Easter, so that the greenery has time to grow to its normal state. Don't forget to water all week (once a day). You can draw funny faces on the shell.
Collecting a herbarium
You can collect a collection of flowers and petals in a herbarium. To do this, the flowers can be dried under a press or ironed through paper several times. Don't forget to label all your plants.
It is better to start collecting a herbarium with the simplest plants known to the child. Suitable for collecting are leaves from trees, as well as flowers and herbs (chamomile, plantain, timothy, clover).
For younger children, you can make an autumn herbarium from bright yellow and red leaves, and make a beautiful composition on each page in the album. With older children, it is advisable to sign each collected copy. It’s better to dry herbs with their roots, for clarity.
How to dry leaves for a herbarium
Two ways.
- We dry it in newspapers. After carefully straightening the leaves, arrange the plants between old newspapers. Try to give the plant a natural look. Some leaves can be specially bent so that the underside is visible. Stack the newspapers on top of each other, with a few more sheets of newsprint or paper napkins between them to absorb moisture. Press down the structure on top with something heavy, for example several large books. The herbs and flowers will take about two weeks to dry. Every 2-3 plants are replaced with new paper napkins to prevent them from rotting.
- Dry with an iron. Wrap the sheet in napkins and newspapers and iron it several times with a not too hot iron. Set the herbarium aside for a few hours, then iron it again. Repeat the procedure with the iron 3-4 times until the plant is completely dry.
How to design an album?
- Scientifically.
The dried plant is applied to A3 sheets and carefully glued with thin strips of white paper or sewn with thread in several places. Seeds in a bag and a label are placed next to each other, where the name of the genus and species of the plant is written in Russian and Latin, the place and time of collection. Herbariums are lined with parchment sheets and collected in a binder.
- Herbarium for children.
You can glue or sew leaves and herbs to landscape or cardboard sheets, and these, in turn, are placed in transparent files and in a binder. Leaves and flowers look convenient and beautiful in magnetic photo albums. The child himself will be able to beautifully arrange the leaves and arrange such an album. If the plant is large, then it can be placed on the leaf in fragments: part of the stem, root, leaf, flower and seeds in bags. For herbs and flowers with a long stem (for example, cereals), do not cut the stem before drying, but bend it several times to create sharp corners. You can place a picture or photograph of the entire plant next to it, especially if it is a tree or shrub. Help your child write the name of the plant correctly.
