Monument “Glory to the Heroes” and mass grave
The main military monument of Volkhov is the memorial “……..”, erected in memory of the fallen defenders of the fatherland. It is at this memorial that the main events on May 9 and other memorable dates are held.
The monument stands on the mass grave where 335 Soviet soldiers rested, including Hero of the Soviet Union S. P. Ketiladze, generals N. A. Bolotnikov, A. V. Kichkailov, M. F. Pepelev, brigade commissar V. A. Ovcharenko . The monument represents a star on a pedestal, around which there is a flower bed. On both sides of the pedestal there are inscriptions: “Glory to the heroes of the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945, who fell in battles for the freedom and independence of our Motherland” and “To the heroes who gave their lives in battles with the Nazi invaders on the outskirts of the city of Volkhov in 1941 -1944." On both sides there are memorial plaques with the names of the soldiers buried here. There is a small park around. It is located at the intersection of Kommunarov and Trade Union streets.
ZIS-3 anti-tank gun and letter to descendants
In the center of Volkhov, in a small park, it is installed on a white elongated pedestal in the middle of a small park. The location for installing the gun was not chosen by chance. It was here that the line of contact with the enemy passed in 1942. Under the pedestal was a time capsule with a message from the current generation to their descendants.
It was an ideal weapon for defense. The production of guns did not require a large amount of materials and complex operations. They could be mass produced. Its combat qualities made it possible to destroy the main weapon of the blitzkrieg - tanks. At the same time, the cost of the gun was significantly less than the combat vehicle and it was much easier to replace it. In memory of these guns, which held back the onslaught of the enemy, salvoes of fireworks are fired today on May 9th.

Monument to the Heroic Defenders of Volkhov
Another monument perpetuating the feat of the Red Army soldiers is the memorial complex “…….”. It is located at the highest point of the area on the river bank. It was at this height that anti-aircraft batteries were located, providing cover for the city and the positions of the front line of our troops from Luftwaffe raids.
The monument consists of three vertical pylons, corresponding to the number of years that the battle for Leningrad lasted. On both sides of the pylons there are concrete blocks with the dates “1941” and “1943”. Later, in 1985, anti-aircraft gunners' weapons were added to the composition - a wartime 85-mm anti-aircraft gun. The surrounding landscape even today resembles an artillery position - large depressions and gaps surrounding a relatively flat platform for guns. Several fir trees were planted around the pylons. There is a flower bed and paths.
